Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
So I was at that Microplay store and they had copies of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for only a little bit more than the average cost of a Nintendo DS game. Having heard so many great things about it from sources like Joystiq and DS Fanboy, I decided to take a "chance" on the game, and I was not disappointed at all. It certainly is a different kind of experience--much more of a quest and an interactive story than a true "game"--but if you have anything of a taste for anime and manga, it will definitely appeal to that side of you. So far I've only finished half of the game (three of the five cases.) I'm curious about Trama Center: Under the Knife, but so far I've resisted picking it up; I'm already swamped with games as it is.Speaking of other games, I've been playing a lot of Street Fighter Anthology in the last few weeks. I _love_ that game; it is now my #1 favourite fighting game compilation. That's not to say that I've stopped playing Street Fighter III, Capcom vs. SNK 2, or King of Fighters 2000-2003. It has been a long time since I played a round of Guilty Gear X2, though.
Disgaea 2 was released today, which means that my local EB Games might have it in stock by late tomorrow afternoon. At any rate, I hope to have a copy in my hands by the end of the week. I've been considering whether to start Disgaea 2 right away or to hold off until I've gotten further in Phantom Brave, and I think it likely that Phantom Brave will get pushed off to the side in favour of more Disgaea. I still hope to finish Phantom Brave eventually, and even Makai Kingdom, but Disgaea is worthy enough to break the chain of playing them in chronological order.
I also bought a new monitor today. I've been drooling over Dell's 24" widescreen monitors for a while now, and they've dropped to around $800. You can get a Dell 30" widescreen (!!!) for about $2,000. Anyway, I managed to get my grubby mitts on a refurbished HP f2105, which is a 21" widescreen monitor, for only $350 + tax. Although it's not my absolute #1 choice, it's still a huge step up from the old 17" LCD monitor that I had before: an NEC 1712 from about four years back.
I have had an absolute blast using my video card's DVI output for the first time, and cranking World of WarCraft and Counter-Strike: Source to 1680x1050 resolution. I thought that with that many pixels on-screen my poor Radeon 9600 would choke, but it's held up fairly well (WoW has modest graphics reqs and my CS:Source settings aren't maxed out or anything.) Overall, I'd say this is a big win.
Getting the new monitor is also something of a first step towards building that new PC with the socket AM2 CPU, dual-channel RAM, and PCI-E 16x (or whatever) video card. I'm wavering on budgeting as much as $2,000 towards it, but getting a cheaper monitor will definitely help me to afford the $1,200 - $1,600 that I do end up spending. When that day comes, I feel like I'll finally be able to play Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Age of Empires III. It would be nice if something even more awesome than that came out in the meantime, though.
